The Phoenix is an Earthship.

An Earthship is a brand of passive solar earth shelter that is made of both natural and upcycled materials such as bottles, cans, and earth-packed tires, pioneered by architect Michael Reynolds.

An Earthship addresses six principles or human needs:

  1. Thermo-solar heating and cooling

  2. solar and wind electricity

  3. self-contained sewage treatment

  4. building with natural and recycled materials

  5. water harvesting and long term storage

  6. some internal food production capability

The Phoenix is a work of sustainable art.

It includes a jungle greenhouse which creates its own microclimate and outer greenhouse features towering banana trees, grape vines, birds, turtles and even a fish pond, an Earthship-inspired chicken coop and run, an outdoor fire pit with seating, BBQ grill and outdoor eating and sitting area. A cozy fireplace with water fountain, free WiFi and TV with Netflix are also available and are all solar-powered. Despite the creature comforts of this living abode, the lack of grid centered mechanism creates a silence and peace free from the whir and hum of traditional electrical and plumbing systems. Residents are encouraged to tour the Global Earthship Community for a deeper understanding of these innovations free of charge as part of their experience at All Is Leaf.

The Phoenix is an ongoing experiment in sustainable design.

Custom finishes abound in this fantastical Earthship, including stained glass and handmade tile. The outer attached (or second) greenhouse is busy with plants, live birds ~ that fly about freely and a fish and turtle pond. There is a large yard with a fire pit, and propane grill.
